Like, every time I tried to replay it, an exception occurred, and clicking ignore just threw me to choosing a name for the protagonist and began day 1. But when I got that again, I clicked rollback twice, the game closed, and when I reopened it that same replay was functioning properly...
Love the game but what gets me most after following for years now is Professor Arne. He doesn't exactly have much dialogue but I wish he was alot more involved with how much of a pretty boy he is. I heard of cancellations of his route back then but a guy can dream.
Did they remove the NSFW visuals? I just reinstalled on a new device so I have to skip through stuff I already did, but I feel like even only on two routes (Bjorn and Rune) I have significantly less NSFW in my gallery than I usually do. Also, the Legacy code isn't working for me. It takes the code but won't actually give me the toggle in preferences.
Normally I only comment AFTER finishing everything the build I played has to offer... but damn, this is very well-written and pulls at the heartstrings JUST RIGHT.
I only played what's currently available in Mikko's route, and I loved all the deep lines and metaphors (and the protagonist just makes me feel like they're suffering from depression), and I don't think I've seen romance novels (visual or not) go in the direction of the protagonist still not being sure of their feelings when the love interest confesses...
I'm looking forward to playing the other routes, but I need to take a break because that route broke me (in a good way).

The Bad Ending - stay with Mikko but ignore him. (I think you only need to ignore his invitation to go outside, but if you're going for a bad ending - might as well ignore him completely, this way the final scene seems more natural).
THE WORST ENDING - Agree to stay with Mikko, but bail on him when you find the key.
Worst ending felt a bit sudden, to say the least... It just feels like everything just goes completely unresolved. Bad ending felt more definitive. Sure, it ends with day 3, but the protagonist truly felt broken by the events of that route. I feel their choice at the end was understandable, even if I find it a bit rushed. Very well-written, but I still think Mikko's good ending (at least as far as was released) is the best in terms of the emotional range it made me feel, tied with the bad ending for pure writing quality.
(And I know what you meant by kinky... in the protagonist's place, I'd find that terrifying)
Keo keeps rewriting the axe murder ending, and it just keeps getting weirder because of it.
I don't know what the scene originally was, I only came around patch 0.28, I think. But I caught the tail end of someone giving Keo shit over changing it. I think it might have used to end with the axe sound, or maybe the axe sound was meaty, or maybe there was blood - something gruesome like that.
In 0.35.1, which I have kept, the cuffs were real(screenshots attached)
Now it's 0.51.1 and there's no blood, no axe, no cuffs... And since there's no Mikko - the scene now suggests that it was all purely imaginary, Arvo simply freaked out from being around Mikko and ran.
That feels more anti-climactic than the jumpscare of the worst ending, IMO. That one at least follows the motif of Mikko's repeating monologue about how nothing we do matters, and we're less than dust on the cosmic scale. You're dying, never having made up for your betrayal to your best friend/love, but at least you both happened, no matter how inexplicably unlikely, and managed to enjoy each other's company for a bit. And if it ended poorly - well... None of it mattered in the first place.
p.s. Imagine Travis' face in the morning when he found out that Arvo fucking DIED! 😳How would he try to make amends for his sticky paws? Would he tell Mikko? How would Mikko feel about it? I love exploring the doomed timelines like this, they are so rich for good meaty developments.
p.p.s. The Bad Ending, if read as "it was all a dream", shouldn't really be the end, as it invites a continuation of the story - Mikko going ballistic from Arvo not just leaving the lodge, but straight up dropping out of the university. Running way from him. FUCKING. AGAIN. It could actually lead to a satisfying ending where Mikko actually corners him with cuffs to make sure this time he stays around long enough for them to talk. How it would go from there - imagine for yourself, fanon is bae. ;)
I like how artistically artificial they look. Their expressions, their poses - they are aimed directly at YOU, the viewer, the only real person here, whose act of witnessing the show makes it real.
When it's a one on one dialogue, your companion stands in the middle of the frame, staring right at you, unblinking, like they are a character in a Wes Anderson movie. His works exude the same artistic artificiality as the old Dawn Chorus sprites - everything is not just artificial, but draws attention to its artificial nature.
I always loved works of fiction that are not afraid to make a nod, or better yet, a full bow to their artificial nature. "Pathologic" is a great example - it has main characters, background characters, and then the extras that don't even get a costume, they are just wearing a black bodysuit and a mask to create the sense of scale and numbers.
But back to Dawn Chorus. It's not just the old sprites that have this artistically artificial nature, other aspects of the FVN share that quality.
The background extras are not even black-clad shadows, they straight up don't exist. There's several dozen people in the lodge, you only ever see less than a dozen.
A lot of the writing here is unnatural in an artistic fashion as well.
Every single OOC dialogue about ships at the sea the characters have is non-diegetic, it doesn't actually happen in the world of the VN.
Every single perspective change is just the omnipotent storyteller lifting the curtain only to you, the viewer.
Every single monologue is saturated with theatrical pathos, like there's a literal spotlight shining on the speaker. Especially the self-analyzational sermons you shouldn't hear, because they are happening inside another character's head, or even in another time. It's completely fake but also extremely awesome.
And the old sprites really add to that feel - they grasp your attention demanding you witness them.
And the best part is that it's all entirely accidental. The creators of this FVN did not intend this at all, it happened by completely improbable sheer cosmic occurrence. The universe just shuffled the deck of reality 14 billion years ago and a never-ending sequence of happenstances made it just so happen that the people behind Dawn Chorus had created this deeply artistic artificial feel to their work while just trying to tell a story.
Wes Anderson is a good catch, watching Asteroid City was what emboldened me to go further with the non-diegetic elements of narration. My first inspiration behind these would likely be Kunihiko Ikuhara's animes, mostly Penguindrum and Utena. I like the idea of these moments fading in an out, weaved into the narrative, complementing the more life-like fabric and vice versa.

Genuinely the first visual novel that made me cry. I was so sad about Miko's route for like a week before having to mentally stop myself from thinking about it. 11/10 PEAK.

It explains it in the post itself, but just download the apk file, or if you already have the app, it should have the option to “update” it. This is version where you can enable NSFW in the “preferences” tab of the game.
If you want the SFW only version, just download the latest one from itch.io.

Pretty much what happened is that itch.io removed all the NSFW content, or at the very least heavily censored it from their website, if im not wrong. So any version on itch.io will be SFW only for the foreseeable future, and any NSFW version will be on another site, like Patreon in this case.
Yeah this stopped weeks ago, nsfw games are allowed again, i think its only a select few categories that are banned... stuff like incest, r*pe, ect. Though im not 100% sure i do know the nsfw ban has been lifted for the most part. As games like BDCC and Tennis ace are able to be seen again just by typing nsfw furry games android.

Only some of the saves, made in the last two updates, should be incompatible. If none work, we recommend using Jump to route option, and then skipping text with Ctrl button. Sorry for the inconvenience!
to add onto what the team said: you can use the console (you will have to create an options.rpy in dawn chorus\game with the text "define config.console = True") to jump to a specific portion (the command is jump.dayX_day_part, with X being the day and day_part being the name of the chunk, you might have to dig in game files to find that specific name). do note that the game might break if any major dialogue choices were skipped.

I downloaded the new version and i have realized that the saves from the previous version are showing in there, of course when you click on them nothing loads but i wonder why they still show even tough i am launching a new version, also, the gallery photos show as well but i wanted to see if there was a way that we can restart everything, no saves showing or no gallery photos showing

Apparently the gallery of the game doesn't work on my Android when I go further past Torulf shower CG. I tried to reboot the game, but still got the same error. Did the CG gallery section got misplaced or what?
yup, if you look at the files you'll see that the torulf shower thumbnail was placed into the nsfw cg folder, but the calls for it were not changed, so it is trying to pull a file that doesnt exist (in that location) anymore. happens on all devices to my knowledge, you could in theory mess with the code yourself but that would be very complex so for now you can just extract the archive.rpa with a tool like rpaextract, or just simply go back to an older version to see the cgs on that page.
Just curious, but on android when Arvo first enter his room, you don't get any options to visit either Lake, Mikko, and maybe none, unlike on windows, where you do.
More about it is in the latest devlog. The current build should work on Mac, we have tested it on one machine, but I've heard of one other case of the VN not launching when NSFW patch was applied.
Right click and "Show Package Contents", Contents > MacOS > Dawn_Chorus to open app directly through terminal. A little janky to open but runs the same.
Can someone please help me, i'm trying to continue my Lake day 2 saves but it keeps giving me this error. Did i import the file correctly? If i press igonre, it takes me back to the intro
We've downgraded from RenPy v8.4 to v8.2 because of issues on Android; saves made very recently might not work for that reason, we're sorry about that :c
Changes to the code for the current Rune we've made in v0.50 turned out to be incompatible with some of his older legacy expressions x.x were sorry for that, we'll fix it in the next update.
You just healed me. I have re-read this so many times that the intro was burned into my skull. Hell, I even memorised the 'We're Ships At Sea' poem off my heart.

It always nagged me that Mikko somehow brought all that music equipment with one hiking bag before the intro change. Even Arvo mentioned it, bug got waved off by Mikko. Glad that can be explained now, hehe.
When Arvo takes his first picture in the camp, he captures an eagle in the corner of his photo. Right after this, after his nap, the title card appears. The eagle is also in the top right corner of the title card.
When I play Jake's Day 3 there's an error, in the gallery there's an error too and Jorgen's Day 2. Im using android phone. Hope it will fix soon. Thank you. Sorry im not good in english 🥲

it should still run, it seems that somewhere in the code an extraneous nsfw term is undef. simply press ignore and go on about wwith the story.

Only some of the saves, made in the last two updates, should be incompatible. If none work, we recommend using Jump to route option, and then skipping text with Ctrl button. Sorry for the inconvenience!
to add onto what the team said: you can use the console (you will have to create an options.rpy in dawn chorus\game with the text "define config.console = True") to jump to a specific portion (the command is jump.dayX_day_part, with X being the day and day_part being the name of the chunk, you might have to dig in game files to find that specific name). do note that the game might break if any major dialogue choices were skipped.

on PC - yes, they're in appdata in an elegantly named folder, the path would be: %APPDATA%\RenPy\DemoTest1-1585236210

I downloaded the new version and i have realized that the saves from the previous version are showing in there, of course when you click on them nothing loads but i wonder why they still show even tough i am launching a new version, also, the gallery photos show as well but i wanted to see if there was a way that we can restart everything, no saves showing or no gallery photos showing
I already try to delete the previous versions that i got, re download the v.0.50 version and its still showing in there
dawn chorus\game\saves delete everything in there
%APPDATA%\renpy find dawn chorus in there and delete it (unsure about this step, but there are dawn chorus save files in there)
The correct path would be the elegantly named %APPDATA%\RenPy\DemoTest1-1585236210
If you delete everything from it on your PC, that should be enough. In case of Android, simply delete and reinstall the VN!
Apparently the gallery of the game doesn't work on my Android when I go further past Torulf shower CG. I tried to reboot the game, but still got the same error. Did the CG gallery section got misplaced or what?

yup, if you look at the files you'll see that the torulf shower thumbnail was placed into the nsfw cg folder, but the calls for it were not changed, so it is trying to pull a file that doesnt exist (in that location) anymore. happens on all devices to my knowledge, you could in theory mess with the code yourself but that would be very complex so for now you can just extract the archive.rpa with a tool like rpaextract, or just simply go back to an older version to see the cgs on that page.
Just curious, but on android when Arvo first enter his room, you don't get any options to visit either Lake, Mikko, and maybe none, unlike on windows, where you do.
These options appear only if you've ever got their routes on the device you're playing on!

More about it is in the latest devlog. The current build should work on Mac, we have tested it on one machine, but I've heard of one other case of the VN not launching when NSFW patch was applied.

Contents > MacOS > Dawn_Chorus to open app directly through terminal. A little janky to open but runs the same.
We've downgraded from RenPy v8.4 to v8.2 because of issues on Android; saves made very recently might not work for that reason, we're sorry about that :c

Changes to the code for the current Rune we've made in v0.50 turned out to be incompatible with some of his older legacy expressions x.x were sorry for that, we'll fix it in the next update.

Had to install a fresh copy of Dawn Chorus since my game corrupted. Seeing my whole save list gone hurt me at a spiritual and physical level ):

You just healed me. I have re-read this so many times that the intro was burned into my skull. Hell, I even memorised the 'We're Ships At Sea' poem off my heart.

It always nagged me that Mikko somehow brought all that music equipment with one hiking bag before the intro change. Even Arvo mentioned it, bug got waved off by Mikko. Glad that can be explained now, hehe.

When Arvo takes his first picture in the camp, he captures an eagle in the corner of his photo. Right after this, after his nap, the title card appears. The eagle is also in the top right corner of the title card.
