The current Itch situation
Hi folks,
It's not a happy day for the FVN creators nor the community. As you might have heard, Itch (and Steam as well) was forced by the payment providers to take measures against some of the content on their platform. The content in question likely includes incest, r*pe and other legally questionable content, but the extent of it remains unknown - we're yet to receive guidelines or a clarifications. You can read Itch's statement here: https://itch.io/updates/update-on-nsfw-content
The course of action they chose to follow was to deindexed all NSFW projects immediately. That includes all projects tagged as having sensitive content, either self-tagged or tagged by Itch moderators - having 'nsfw' or 'adult' in tags is enough. Now they're proceeding with an internal review of all the available adult content. After the review is over, they plan to add compliance measures for all adult projects on their platform.
In short, this means that affected projects:
- aren't searchable within Itch
- aren't discoverable and won't be shown in recommendations
- if found non-compliant with guidelines that weren't made public, get removed from the platform altogether - including from libraries of people who paid for them
The affected projects are still:
- accessible through links
- accessible through search engines like Google, at least at the moment
- visible in libraries and collections
From the wording of the post, it looks like the deindexing is temporary and will be reversed when the audit is over - but I might be wrong. While their communication could and should be clearer, Itch is a small team and it's absolutely a nightmare for them too. I have no reason to doubt they're doing what they think is in the best interest of the creators on their platform - while an inconvenience, it's far from a nuclear option like blocking access to all adult content on their platform temporarily
I believe that this is a reason to be very alarmed, but it's not a reason to panic - yet. Despite terrible communication, I believe Itch deserves a benefit of doubt regarding their intentions. The censorship is here, but the end of the world for all adult games has not yet come.
As for Dawn Chorus, fearing the current political climate, we've been working on a safe for work version of the visual novel to put on platforms like Itch and Steam that promote SFW content over anything NSFW. As you might've known, any projects tagged as adult weren't searchable or discoverable through Itch for not logged in users before deindexing, largely limiting their reach. I've contacted Itch support and I'm waiting for their reply on how to proceed with this and we'll determine the next course of action once we have an answer.
In the meantime, for period unknown, deindexing means no discoverability, less views and less downloads for adult Furry Visual Novels, even if they have SFW mode like Dawn Chorus. Spread the word about FVNs by mouth or text, support your artists, use collections to find new visual novels, like this one: https://itch.io/c/3324776/cool-furry-vn-ive-read or the FVN index here: https://fvn.li/

We WILL push through this, I didn't wanna say anything because I never comment (amazing game btw. LOVE IT, But aside the point), we need to spread out the word and let others know. This isn't going to end well for sure
Honestly I'm trying to remain silent because I'm affraid that I'm not fully aware of the situation. (yet I still know everything, I just don't know if I understood things properly) So it built up a lot of frustration in me and from the depth of my heart, I totally DESPISE both payment providers, Collective Shout and the developer of No Mercy. Honestly, at this point I don't know which is the worst, Collective Shout or No Mercy? Anyways, I already signed petitions against them as they came across me and I don't think I need to describe just how much flaws are in their decisions, both the 3. As for that developer, they are disgusting. Not necessarily because r*pe is their sex-drive, but because of using their content as a form of UNACCEPTABLE propaganda. As for CS, I DESPISE THEM FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART for being so EXTREMELY blinded and self-righteous hypocrites. Kid drank dad's whiskey because he was an indecent parent, so no adult can drink alcohol anymore sorta stuff. Man, I just feel so much hatred and anger. It's not even an uncontrollable anger but rather the one "They need to be pull off from the high horse" kinda feeling.
It's not up to payment processors to determine what you can do with your money. We all need to harass anyone who will - and won't - listen, and force those assholes to relent. Call reps and senators, sign petitions, protest outside their offices, do what it takes. Shit like this has been going on for too long.
im very sure, legally, Payment services are required by law to not mess with transactions with exemptions like Drug selling or Some criminal financial activity

Everyone contact your local senator and get them to pass the Fair Access to Banking Act, H.R.987 House, S.401 Senate. This would prevent Karen groups like Collective Shout from pressuring Visa and Mastercard payments to stop them from from doing what is currently happening.
The party of pro free speech strikes again... to stamp out free speech.
I have some collections. But so many stuff difficult to organise.
Another thing you can do, besides spreading the word about this deindexing and FVNs, is call and complain to Mastercard and VISA about this policy.
It is very hard to not feel pessimistic about these news because this paints an extremely bleak picture to anything that features queerness in it.
We don't hate payment providers enough
Whew, this is the best take posted so far.
I have to say as a fellow dev I'm appreciating the points in bold - too many people are missing this and screwing themselves over by panicking. Be alarmed, don't be chaotic and panicked. Calm and rational is when you make the best decisions.
Here's hoping itch releases their guidelines sooner rather than later - and that the community shows what they can with reasonable measures such as mailing the companies pushing this.
I think people want to be mad and don't care why they are. Hell, people are getting worried about lgbtq and queerness in general is gonna be treated, and while that is a valid concern, it is completely irrelevant as "The content in question likely includes incest, r*pe and other legally questionable content" Not anything about fellow gays. people just want to panic and riot since the world is shit and if something is a threat then it's "going to be worse eventually" and it might, but if people stopped panicking and had a clearer mind, they could find a solution instead of whining about it. Also it's not about itch being a bitch, it's about these companies wanting a monopoly on people's lives.
edit: it says in the itch.io post that the guidelines are from the payment processers linked to the account (if your money goes through one of these processers, you have to follow the processers rules to ensure you are getting monetized) and itch has nothing to do with those. Itch is trying to keep people making money without trying to piss off the people who enforces the rules, even if this includes free games. Itch has people and families, steam has people, those companies enforcing this never had people.
....just gonna say fuck itch again lol. hope things change, if it doesn't hopefully we'll find a better site....
Hate the payment processors. They're the ones at fault here, not Itch.
I'm saying F itch for how they handled this, but I'll just add in Fuck the processors too.
its gonna be like tumblr when a gay kiss is treated as porn. also the group that pulled this off are hyper terfs so goodbye all trans content
Hopefully those turd burglars will reverse this asinine decision
